FORMER FALCON STANDOUT IS NOW A PROFESSIONAL ATHLETE
7/31/23
Patricia Morris had an outstanding high school career at DHS, being named to 3 all CIF teams as a falcon. Patricia would go on to earn a basketball scholarship to Oregon State University. Eventually Morris would transfer to TCU to finish her college career all the while still working on her game and increasing her strength, quickness and flexibility.
An All Academic selection for her entire career at both universities, always working hard in the classroom. Even with all of the ups and downs she has had to deal with as a basketball player, she never gave up, her reward is a professional basketball career.
Patricia was invited to the WNBA player combine earlier this summer and performed extremely well, and as you can image created a little buzz for herself being an extremely mobile 6-7 forward/center who ran the floor, rebounded and blocked shots at a high level. Morris is signed to world famous Shark Sports Management and has already begun her pro career in Puerto Rico for Isabela. Her supporters in this community look for continued growth from a young woman who has done nothing but beat the odds, the sky being the limit for this skilled big. Falcon nation salutes you Patricia, congratulations and good luck this season.

FALCONS LOSE TO GEFFEN ACADEMY IN 1ST ROUND CIF PLAYOFF GAME TO END SEASON
2/10/2023
Our lady falcons basketball team battled all year in what was an up and down season full of tough breaks. Friday's game versus Geffen Academy started out promising as our falcons kept it close for 3 quarters in a sea saw contest. But after some early 4th quarter gaffe's, our falcons never recovered ultimately losing this contest by 20 points to the home team to end their season.
Thank you to all of the players as well as our coaching staff for their determined effort all year. We wish the best of luck to all of our seniors in all of your future endeavors.

SENIOR NIGHT AT FALCON GYM, A CELEBRATION OF THIS YEARS SENIOR CLASS
1/26/2023
Varsity : 9-13 overall (4-4 league)
JV: 6-6 overall (5-2 league)
Last nights celebration of the falcon seniors on this years squad was a very festive and happy affair. Our jv falcons started the evening off with an impressive 39-19 victory over Nogales jv squad. Once again the jv team played outstanding on both ends of the floor running out to a 15 point cushion immediately and never looking back.
The night cap featured our varsity falcons versus the Nobles varsity squad. This years seniors are Idalee Villa, Celeste Morales, Daisy Lopez, Rebecca Ramirez, Vanessa Valenzuela, and Andreaya Morales. After a heartwarming ceremony for this years seniors along with their families, Duarte started out strong keeping the game close for 3 and a half quarters.
Senior Idalee Villa once again led the way for Duarte in the offensive department, but the lack of offensive firepower since losing the teams leading scorer Aurora Sanchez a few weeks ago has begun to catch up to the falcons. Just as a close game had slipped away earlier this week, our lady falcons would see yet another close contest fall from within their reach. Ultimately Duarte would end up losing this contest to Nogales by the score of 52-43.

LADY FALCONS VARSITY SUFFER TOUGH LOSS TO SV, JV FALCONS GET 2ND STRAIGHT VICTORY
1/24/2023
Varsity : 9-12 overall (4-3 league)
JV: 5-6 overall (4-2 league)
Last nights contest was a must win conference affair for our varsity lady falcons to stay in the thick of the conference race. Unfortunately they were unable to get it going offensively to get the w in a very winnable contest. Shot's just did not fall as our falcons fell to the dons on the road 25-20.
Our jv lady falcons fared much better running away with a 39-24 victory for their 2nd straight dub (w) in conference play. Total team effort for the second straight contest, as the jv squad got it done on both ends to earn the victory.

BOTH FALCON SQUADS MAKE SATURDAY DOOMSDAY FOR THE DONS
1/21/23
Varsity: 9-11 (4-2 league)
JV: 4-6 overall (3-2 league)
After losing a tough ball game this past week to Azusa, our jv basketball squad was looking for a little retribution. Our jv girls started out smoking and never let their foot off the throttle in rout to a 42-19 victory over Sierra Vista in the first game.
In contrast, our varsity lady falcons were coming off of an impressive set of victory's this past week, and looked to insert themselves into the thick of the conference race. The falcons started off fast in this contest, running out to a 9-0 lead. Duarte controlled the tempo of the game for the majority of the contest, but ended up having to struggle to hold on for a 35-31 victory over the Dons. Great team defense led to many steals in this ball game for our falcons, which in the end, they needed everyone one of those extra possessions. The falcons were led offensively by Idalee Villa's 10 points, Zyanne Diaz's 6 points (on 2 three point field goals), Valeria Nunez's 5 points, Nadalee Ramos 4 points, Celeste Morales & Princess Ayala's 2 points each.

BOTH FALCON SQUADS BOUNCE BACK AT HOME 1/17/2023
Varsity: 7-11 overall (2-2 league)
JV: 3-5 overall (2-1 league)
After a tough weekend loss on the road, both of our falcon squads were looking for a little redemption at home versus Workman at Falcon gym last night. The jv squad got the afternoon off to a fast start with a blow out 39-9 win over the Lobo's to earn their conference win of the season.
The varsity lady falcons took their cue from the jv squad, and started off fast to take a commanding double digit lead over the visiting Lobo's in the first half. The second half was much more of the same as our falcons ran away with a 38-20 victory to earn their second win in conference play.

BOTH FALCON SQUADS LOSE ON THE ROAD AT AZUSA 1/14/2023
Varsity: 6-11 overall (1-2 league)
JV: 2-5 overall (1-1 league)
Friday the 13th is typically considered bad luck, but Saturday the 14th proved to be bad luck for both of our squads this week. The jv squad started out slowly trailing 12-1 in the first quarter before quickly closing that gap and only trailing 14-9 in the second quarter a one point. The rest of the game didn't go as well for our jv charges, as turnovers and lack of defensive intensity at times hurt them the latter part of the ball game. A late run by the falcons cut the lead to 9, but the inability to convert some shots down the stretch hurt them too much as they fell to the jv Azusa squad by double digits.
By stark contrast, the varsity squad played a nail bitter from start to finish in what was a defensive battle all game long. We have had rain all day, but falcons fans were hoping for a lot of rain in the form of falcon buckets in the gym today, which never happened. Both teams must have thought there was a lid on the baskets as this low scoring affair trudged on, unfortunately our varsity falcons would lose this contest by the score of 17-12 to the Aztecs. Tough day at the office today, but our falcons have plenty of opportunities next week with a full slate of league games on the docket.

1/12/2023
Varsity : 6-10 overall (1-1 league)
JV : 2-4 overall (1-0 league)
Last night's home games for our varsity and jv squads were anxiously anticipated by all after a long stretch of away games. Neither team disappointed the home fans, the jv falcons rolled to a 42-15 victory over Edgewood HS jv team in a non-league contest. It was a total team effort defensively as well as offensively as our falcons converted lay up after layup after steals/turnovers by Edgewood.
Our varsity falcons kicked their game into a different gear last night with a 34-18 victory over Gladstone in a league contest to even their league record to 1-1 on the season. Great job on both ends of the floor by our falcons last night to get the w, but another road conference game looms as our falcons will visit Azusa for their next contest.

FALCONS LOSE A TOUGH ONE TO NOGALES ON THE ROAD
1/10/2023
5-10 overall (0-1 league)
Tonight's contest for our varsity lady falcons was on the road versus Nogales HS. The lady falcons leading scorer Aurora Sanchez suffered a season ending knee injury a couple of games ago, which of course really had our falcons working at a deficit. With that said, this was a nail bitter, with our falcons hanging tough before falling 46-41 to the Nobles in their first league contest.

FALCONS LOSE TO SYLMAR ON THE ROAD
11/30/2022
3-4 overall (0-0 league)
Our lady falcons went on the road to take on an unbeaten Sylmar Spartan basketball team in a tough road test. Our lady falcons have been looking for an identity up to this point in terms of what type of basketball team they truly are. They have shown flashes of very good play, they just need a good win versus a good basketball team to answer that question. Unfortunately a good Spartan team had no such plans on this afternoon of allowing confidence to sink in, or more importantly give our young charges an answer to that question. Duarte never quite got their footing in this contest, losing in convincing fashion 65-37.

EVENT CENTER GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY 2/19/2022
The city of Duarte made a bold statement yesterday afternoon at the high school. The groundbreaking ceremony played host to Falcons from all decades since the schools existence. For those few who could make it, every decade was represented with former DHS student athletes from the 1960's, 1970's, 1980's,1990's & 2000's.
This historic event was put together by DUSD Assistant Superintendent of Business Tiffany Bell and her amazing staff at the district office. DUSD Superintendent of schools Gordon Amerson, DUSD school board members Reyna Diaz (Board President), Ceci Carroll (Vice Pres./Clerk), Ken Bell (Board member), Dr. James Finlay (Board member), Jacqueline Ku (Board member) were all in attendance. Former Duarte Mayor's Mrs. Margaret Finlay (served as mayor 6 times/current city council member) and Lois Gaston (1st & only African American women to become mayor of Duarte) were also in attendance along with former DHS student/athlete, LA Fire dept. employee, current Council member for the city of Duarte Toney Lewis.
Some of the former athletes that were in attendance yesterday was Johnnie Shelton (All-CIF Football player/All CIF Track&Field Shot-Put) class of 92", Gary Jake (Football/Basketball/Track/weightlifting) class of 86", Cedric Coleman (All CIF Track&Field/pre-season football all american 1986) class of 86", Anthony McGowan (All CIF Basketball/1st D1 basketball recruit in school history/former professional basketball player) class of 86", Tori Brown (All CIF Football/All CIF Track&Field), Eric Dorsey (Football/Basketball) class of 87", Josh Barber (Baseball/Basketball/Football) class of 87", Glenn "General Lee" Lee (Basketball/Football) class of 80", Jessie Ellis (Basketball) class of 80", Zequioa Williams (All CIF girls Basketball/CIF Div. 4A player of the year 2007) class of 2007", Wendy Moreno (Girls basketball/current DUSD Business dept. employee) class of 94". There were also other athletes representing the class of 1960, class of 1973, & the class of 1976 - so this was a small but varied showing representing all decades of Duarte excellence.
This was a well orchestrated event that really allowed a lot of people like myself to take in all of the talented individuals who have donned uniforms for "BIG BLUE" over the years. It was an awesome experience for any on looker, this writer included. Kudos to Tiffany Bell and her entire team for their tireless work in pulling this event off, the City of Duarte thanks you.
