DUARTE – The Duarte High School girls basketball team won its 28th consecutive Montview League game and all but locked up its second consecutive title with an 84-74 win over second-place Workman on Wednesday night.
The win gave the Falcons (17-1, 10-0) a two-game lead over the Lobos (18-5, 9-2) with four to play. No other team in league has come within 20 points of either squad.
“On paper it looks pretty good,” Falcons coach Mark Smith said. “But it’s not over yet. We’re just going to take them one game at a time.”
The Falcons, leading 73-72 with 2:10 left, took advantage of their height and athleticism down the stretch.
Imari Brown hit a jumper in the lane before Shareese Cox, who was given a technical foul for excessive flopping in the first meeting between the teams, took the ball to the basket for back-to-back scores to seal the win. Yasmine Wilson took control of the boards in the late going.
Brown led the Falcons with 25 points, Wilson had 19 and Cox added 15.
“I’m really proud of our girls,” Lobos coach Joe Oronoz said. “To stay with a good Duarte team that is taller, more athletic and more everything we tried to stay with them, but the best team won today.”
The Falcons got a big performance from senior Mikayla Tickey, who was 3 for 3 on 3-point attempts and had a key steal down the stretch. She finished with 23 points.
“I was just focused on winning tonight,” Tickey said. “We knew this would be a tough game because they just keep coming.
“We had to stay calm, take a deep breath and re-gather ourselves and that’s what we did.”
The Lobos struggled from 3-point range, where they went 10 of 40, but the difference was at the free-throw line. The Falcons were 13 of 20 to the Lobs’ 4 of 7.
Lobos senior Evelyn Herrera, who is averaging more than 26 points per game, struggled from the 3-point line and hit only 5 of 19 tries, but she led the Lobos with 25 points.
